A great add on to an East African Safari is an excursion to the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. It is rich in history, Stone Town is a World Heritage Site and has a maze of narrow streets. Back in the 1800’s Zanzibar was an important place involved in the Slave Trade and today there is a museum to visit and a chilling sculpture to pause at.
You might also be surprised when you walk past the house where Freddie Mercury of Queen was born! Yes he was born there when it was still under British colonial rule.
Spend a few days in Stone Town and then you can also spend time on some of its wonderful beaches.
This BBC article on restoration is interesting although the photo’s make it look as the whole place is run down!
